You're due to do a work placement and a number of questions come to mind: do I need an agreement, will I be paid? Here are some answers to the main questions you may have.

I would like to do an internship. Do I need an internship agreement?

YesTo be eligible for a work placement, you must have a placement agreement signed by your school or university, your host company and yourself. It is not possible to do an internship without an agreement.

My school/university won't give me an agreement. How can I get one?

A work placement must be linked to a training course. Only your school or university can sign an internship agreement for you.

If they don't want to, think about mini-workshops Internships: the Chambers of Commerce and Industry and the Chambers of Trades and Crafts sign agreements with pupils and students for optional internships of up to 5 days during the school holidays.

Please note: the World Internships programme from the Burgundy-Franche-Comté Region allows you to go abroad on a work placement outside your studies for 3 to 5 months (if you are in a semester or gap year, for example). The programme includes a work placement agreement and a grant.

Will I receive compensation?

If your work placement lasts less than 2 months, your employer is not obliged to pay you any compensation. More than 2 monthsThis is compulsory. The minimum amount is 4.35 per hour.

How long can my placement last?

The maximum duration of an internship is 6 months per course year.

Will I have the same rights as the company's employees?

You will have the same rights as employees of your host company in particular with regard to :

  • working hours (maximum working hours, daily rest, weekly rest, public holidays, night work),
  • access to meal vouchers or the company restaurant,
  • access to social and cultural activities provided by the Social and Economic Committee (CSE),
  • reimbursement of public transport costs,
  • protection against harassment.

I need to do a work placement as part of my studies. Who can help me find one?

Most institutions support their students in their search for work placements (methodology, CV and covering letter writing, access to job offers or lists of companies, etc.).
At theMarie and Louis Pasteur University (formerly the University of Franche-Comté) is the OSE service (Orientation Stages emploi).
It offers group workshops, one-to-one meetings and internships.

Does my student visa entitle me to do a work placement?

Yes provided you have a internship agreement signed between your school or university and the organisation that will host your work placement.
Internship regulations are the same as for French students.
