I need help with administrative formalities (scholarship applications, Crous housing, Visale guarantee, Caf housing assistance, etc.). Who can help me?

How do I open a bank account?

We can open an account from age 16but before the age of 18, parental authorization is required.

You must present a identificationa proof of address and deposit a minimum amount varies from bank to bank.

If the bank refuses, which is rare, contact the Banque de France which will designate a bank where you can open an account.

Do I have to file a tax return?

From age 18you have 2 possibilities

  • or you remain attached to your parents' tax household (as a student, you can stay until you're 25, otherwise until you're 21), 
  • or you file your own tax return.

The choice you make will have consequences on your parents' taxes, on the family benefits they receive, on the assistance (housing benefit, etc.) you may or may not apply for (as their income will be taken into account in the calculation)... Talk it over with them!

How do I file my 1st tax return?

You must make it online at www.economie.gouv.fr.
If you do not have your login details, please contact public finance center 5 bd Charles de Gaulle (open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 8am-12pm and Wednesday 9am-1pm; appointments are recommended).

What do I have to declare to the tax authorities?

You must declare your salaries if you've touched them.

  • If you have astudent job"You only have to declare what exceeds the equivalent of 3 SMIC (€5,318 for 2024 income),
  • If you have received training compensation, you only need to declare what exceeds the annual amount of the SMIC (€21,273 for 2024 income).

  • If your parents pay you a alimonyyou must declare it. The maximum amount to declare is €6,794. Do not declare anything in excess of this amount if your alimony exceeds €6,794.
